Making foil thread
The shells are thinly shaved to a thickness of about 0.1 mm, cut into patterns, and pasted onto washi paper.
The mother-of-pearl layer of a seashell has certain angles at which light does not reflect, so the shell is cut out with the direction of reflection in mind so that the entire design has a natural shine.
The fixation of the glue used varies depending on humidity and temperature, so the composition is adjusted each time to ensure that the shells and foil do not peel off.
Cutting
The washi paper, which has been completed with designs by applying layers of shell nacre and gold decorations, is uniformly cut to a width of about 0.6–0.75 mm using a large blade called a guillotine.
During cutting, the washi is carefully fixed to prevent any deviation in the angle of the blade and meticulous attention is paid to ensure that no damage occurs as it would during weaving.
After cutting, each piece is visually inspected one by one to check that no shell or foil has come off.
Weaving
The cut foil threads are used as weft threads. Using a small shuttle, they are passed through the opened warp threads.
Since the foil threads have a flat shape, they are woven with great care to prevent them from flipping over.
Each time a foil thread is passed through, the marks and patterns at the ends of the thread are visually checked and adjusted so that even the slightest misalignment does not occur. Even a minor shift can diminish the luster of the mother-of-pearl layer.
