Hakuito Making

Thin shells, shaved to about 0.1 mm, are cut into pattern shapes and applied onto washi paper.

Mother-of-pearl reflects light differently by angle, so each piece is cut and placed for a natural luster.

The adhesive is adjusted according to humidity and temperature, ensuring the shells and foil remain firmly in place.

Cutting

Washi with mother-of-pearl and gold decoration is cut into 0.6~0.75 mm strips using a guillotine.

The paper is secured to keep the blade angle precise and prevent damage.

After cutting, each strip is visually inspected for any lifting or peeling of the shell or foil.

Weaving

The cut foil threads are used as weft and passed through the opened warp threads with a small shuttle.

Because the foil threads are flat, they are woven with great care to prevent them from flipping.

With each pass, the marks at the thread ends are checked against the pattern to ensure even the slightest shift does not occur. If the alignment shifts even slightly, the luster of the shell’s mother-of-pearl can be diminished.

Scenes from the workshop

We Weave the Light Nurtured by the Sea

What we weave is the light nurtured by the rhythms of the sea.

At TAMIYA RADEN, we transform the light held within the mother-of-pearl of seashells into delicate threads.By preserving the continuity of their natural reflections as they are woven, we have pioneered a new expression: weaving light itself through our unique technique,Raden-ori.

To wear the light of the sea is to quietly connect with the rhythms of nature.
